The biggest NHL story Friday isn’t one of the goals scored during a wild eight-game Thursday night. It’s Aleksander Barkov leaving the Florida Panthers‘ 4-3 overtime loss to San Jose with another leg injury.
Barkov went down awkwardly while battling for the puck during the second period and immediately headed to Florida’s dressing room. Considering he missed the entire 2025-26 NHL season after undergoing surgery to repair the ACL and MCL in his right knee, the sight understandably created instant concern. There is, however, one significant distinction: Panthers coach Paul Maurice said the new injury is not related to Barkov’s previous right-knee injury. Barkov is being evaluated, with Florida looking for a clearer picture of the injury.
That’s why Barkov leads today’s NHL News, NHL Rumors and NHL Scores roundup. Florida isn’t simply waiting for another injury update. The result could alter how the Panthers approach their lineup, and potentially the trade market, much earlier than anyone expected.
NHL News and NHL Rumors: Barkov Injury Puts Panthers Under Early Pressure
The encouraging part is that Maurice specifically separated Barkov’s latest injury from last year’s reconstructed right knee. The concerning part is that Barkov had only just returned to regular-season NHL action after missing all of 2025-26.
Florida is also managing other health questions. Gustav Forsling missed Thursday’s game and was listed day-to-day, while Brad Marchand has also been unavailable early in the season.
My read is that the Panthers shouldn’t rush into anything based on one night. But if Barkov’s absence becomes anything more than short term, Florida suddenly becomes one of the most interesting teams to watch. Elite centres aren’t sitting on the waiver wire in October, and teams recognize when a contender has an unexpected roster problem.
That brings us directly into the trade market.
Connor Hellebuyck Holdout Keeps NHL Trade Rumors Boiling
Connor Hellebuyck remains away from the Winnipeg Jets as their regular season begins, leaving Stuart Skinner to carry the crease while Winnipeg waits for a resolution to its biggest off-ice storyline.
Sportsnet described Hellebuyck’s situation Friday as a prolonged trade holdout and noted the possibility that his absence becomes increasingly distracting if the situation continues.
Hellebuyck’s contract is what makes this fascinating. His $8.5 million annual cap hit represents approximately 8.2 percent of the NHL’s $104 million 2026-27 salary-cap ceiling. He also possesses significant trade protection, meaning Winnipeg can’t simply send him wherever it finds the highest bid.
Commissioner Gary Bettman has now publicly addressed the broader rise in trade requests involving players with no-movement protection, pointing to situations involving Hellebuyck, Dylan Larkin and Brady Tkachuk. Bettman said he doesn’t view one offseason as enough to establish a league-wide problem, but indicated the issue could eventually become something discussed with the NHLPA if the trend continues.
From a trade-market perspective, that matters. Teams may become increasingly cautious about handing out unrestricted no-movement clauses if executives believe those clauses can eventually give players substantial control over both whether and where they’re traded.

McDavid Explodes While Evan Bouchard Makes NHL History
The wildest game Thursday belonged to Edmonton and Vancouver.
Connor McDavid recorded one goal and four assists as Edmonton escaped with a 9-7 victory. Leon Draisaitl added two goals and an assist, but Evan Bouchard quietly produced the historic number of the night.
Bouchard now has eight points, four goals and four assists, through Edmonton’s first two games, becoming the first NHL defenseman ever to record at least eight points through his team’s opening two games.
The Oilers’ offensive ceiling remains frightening. Their defensive performance Thursday was considerably less comforting.
Edmonton built leads of 5-0 and 8-2 before Vancouver made the game competitive. Devon Levi allowed seven goals on 22 shots. For a team with Stanley Cup expectations, Edmonton can enjoy the two points while still recognizing that surrendering seven goals isn’t a sustainable formula.
The Oilers are also dealing with injuries. Zach Hyman could miss approximately two weeks with an upper-body injury, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
Igor Shesterkin Does Something No Rangers Goalie Had Ever Done
Igor Shesterkin provided Thursday’s most memorable individual moment.
The Rangers goalie made 24 saves in New York’s 5-1 victory over Tampa Bay and then scored into an empty net, becoming the first goaltender in Rangers history to score a goal.
Shesterkin became the 18th NHL goaltender to score and recorded the 21st goalie goal in League history.
New York also received goals from Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Dorofeyev, Eeli Tolvanen and Gabe Perreault while going a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
For a Rangers team trying to reset its identity, that’s about as memorable a home opener as anyone could have drawn up.
Earlier Report Confirmed: Marchenko-Knies Blockbuster Already Making Waves
One developing story we’ve been following can now be moved firmly from rumor into the confirmed category.
Toronto and Columbus completed their blockbuster trade September 28, with the Maple Leafs acquiring Kirill Marchenko, Miles Wood and Elvis Merzlikins while Columbus received Matthew Knies, Emil Andrae, Steven Lorentz and a 2027 second-round pick. Toronto then signed Marchenko to a six-year, $75 million extension carrying a $12.5 million average annual value beginning next season.
Knies didn’t need long to make Columbus feel good about its return.
He scored two goals and added an assist in his Blue Jackets debut Thursday, helping Columbus beat Buffalo 6-3. Charlie Coyle collected three assists and Zach Werenski added two.
That’s an important early data point, not a verdict on the trade. But the fascinating part of this deal is that both teams made a deliberate bet on very different player profiles.
Toronto wanted Marchenko’s offensive play-driving and committed long term. Columbus wanted Knies’ combination of age, size, net-front offence and physical play.
We’ll need months, not one opening-night performance, before judging who benefited most.
Dylan Larkin Injury Adds Another Layer to Detroit Trade Story
Dylan Larkin will miss Detroit’s first two games with an upper-body injury. Head coach Todd McLellan has described him as day-to-day, with the possibility of returning for Detroit’s third game.
Ordinarily that would be a straightforward early-season injury update.
It isn’t ordinary because Larkin requested a trade during the offseason, making every development involving Detroit’s former captain part of a much larger story.
The injury shouldn’t fundamentally change Larkin’s long-term value if it remains short term, but it could temporarily slow any serious trade conversations. No acquiring club wants uncertainty surrounding the health of a centre expected to play major minutes immediately.
