The New York Rangers arrive in Detroit on October 2 with momentum, tired legs and one of the most unusual opening-week storylines imaginable: Igor Shesterkin scored a goal in Thursday’s 5-1 win over Tampa Bay. For fantasy hockey managers, however, the bigger development was the production in front of him. Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play, Adam Fox collected two assists and Pavel Dorofeyev recorded his first goal and assist as a Ranger.
Detroit presents a different fantasy puzzle. The Red Wings open their season without Larkin, who scored 34 goals and 67 points last year. That immediately pushes more responsibility toward Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider and Viktor Arvidsson.
The matchup I’m watching most closely is Detroit’s depleted attack against a Rangers team playing its second game in two nights. New York has the stronger power-play baseline and won two of three against Detroit last season, but a potential change in goal could make this much closer than Thursday’s Rangers performance suggests.
New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings Game Information
Detroit officially opens its 101st NHL season at Little Caesars Arena at 6:30 p.m. ET, which is 5:30 p.m. CT and 4:30 p.m. MT. TNT and truTV carry the game nationally in the United States, with HBO Max streaming; Canadian listings show Sportsnet One/Sportsnet+. Rangers radio is ESPN 880 AM, while Detroit airs the game on 97.1 FM.
New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
New York finished only 34-39-9 with 77 points last season, scoring 235 goals and allowing 249. The Rangers averaged 2.87 goals per game but remained dangerous with the man advantage, converting at 24.7 percent, fifth in the NHL. Their penalty kill finished at 79.9 percent.
Detroit was better overall at 41-31-10 for 92 points, but its underlying profile was hardly dominant. The Red Wings scored 239 goals, allowed 254, averaged 2.91 goals per game and operated at 22.6 percent on the power play. Their 77.1 percent penalty kill ranked 23rd.
New York won two of three meetings last season and outscored Detroit 9-4, including a 4-1 victory in the most recent meeting on April 4.
NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Rangers vs. Red Wings
Zibanejad immediately looks like New York’s safest fantasy play. He scored 34 goals and 78 points last season and opened his 2026-27 scoring with a power-play goal Thursday. Fox is just as intriguing after two assists against Tampa Bay; he produced 53 points in only 55 games last season.
Dorofeyev may be the most interesting new Ranger. He scored 37 goals for Vegas last season and already has two points through his first home game with New York. Thursday’s lines had him with J.T. Miller and Oliver Bjorkstrand, while Zibanejad centered Gabe Perreault and Alexis Lafrenière.
Detroit’s fantasy hierarchy changes dramatically without Larkin. A projected opening-night combination has DeBrincat-Andrew Copp-Raymond, while Arvidsson could play with Emmitt Finnie and J.T. Compher. The projected PP1 includes DeBrincat, Raymond, Arvidsson, Copp and Seider. Those alignments were not yet officially confirmed when checked.

Top Five Rangers and Red Wings Fantasy Scorers From Last Season
Zibanejad led New York with 78 points. Lafrenière and Artemi Panarin each had 57, while Miller and Fox finished with 53. Panarin is now with Los Angeles, so his presence below is historical.
Detroit was led by DeBrincat’s 85 points, followed by Raymond (76), Larkin (67), Seider (60) and Patrick Kane (57). Kane is now back with Chicago.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Larkin’s absence is easily the biggest one. Detroit coach Todd McLellan ruled him out against New York and Winnipeg and said he hopes to have him back for Game 3. That should increase puck touches for DeBrincat and Raymond, while Copp is projected to move into a more important center role.
Detroit is also without Jacob Bernard-Docker on injured reserve. Simon Edvinsson’s absence is a contract dispute, not an injury, and Andreas Englund has been designated non-roster for an immigration issue. Carter Bear and Chase Stillman are injured non-roster.
For New York, backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo is out with a lower-body injury, and Dylan Garand was recalled. Adam Sykora and Aidan Thompson are also unavailable.
Shesterkin played Thursday and made 24 saves, so Garand is a logical possibility on the second night of the back-to-back, but I did not find an official Rangers starter confirmation when researching this article. Detroit’s starter was also not officially confirmed in the first-party sources reviewed.
Rangers vs. Red Wings Salary-Cap Snapshot
PuckPedia lists New York with just $447,407 in projected cap space against a $103.55 million projected hit. Detroit has dramatically more flexibility at $16.77 million in projected space and an $87.23 million projected hit.
Detroit’s flexibility could matter for recalls and future roster moves, particularly with injuries and Edvinsson’s unresolved contract situation. It is roster context, not a direct predictor of tonight’s score.
New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: New York Rangers 4 – Detroit Red Wings 3
I’m giving New York a slight edge despite the back-to-back.
The Rangers looked far more dangerous Thursday than they did in their 3-0 season-opening loss to Boston. Zibanejad, Fox and Dorofeyev were directly involved offensively, and New York went 1-for-2 on the power play while killing all seven Tampa Bay opportunities.
Detroit should create offense through DeBrincat, Raymond and Seider, but removing Larkin from a lineup that averaged only 2.91 goals last season matters. I expect DeBrincat to generate plenty of shots and would consider him Detroit’s strongest one-game fantasy option.
Goaltending is the variable that could change my projection. If New York rests Shesterkin after Thursday’s start, Detroit’s scoring ceiling rises. Conversely, an unexpected Shesterkin start would make me more comfortable with a lower-scoring Rangers win.
More important for season-long fantasy managers than the final score is who gets Detroit’s PP1 touches without Larkin. If Arvidsson and Copp remain alongside DeBrincat, Raymond and Seider, that deployment could have value well beyond opening night.
