The Philadelphia Flyers could become a third-team facilitator in trade talks surrounding Detroit Red Wings centre Dylan Larkin and the Minnesota Wild. In an October 30 report, Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco reported that Philadelphia would consider taking Yakov Trenin’s contract if Minnesota provides appropriate compensation.
The Flyers reportedly have interest in Wild prospect Charlie Stramel, who could become part of the price of moving Trenin’s $3.5 million annual cap hit. That would help Minnesota address the financial challenge of acquiring Larkin, whose cap hit is $8.7 million.
The report arrived one day after Detroit suspended Larkin without pay on October 29 because he informed the team he would no longer play while waiting for a trade. The essential distinction: Philadelphia may have a way to help Minnesota move salary, but there is no confirmed three-team deal, and the Wild still have to satisfy Detroit’s asking price.
That second obstacle may be considerably harder than the first.
Latest Dylan Larkin Trade Rumors: What Daily Faceoff Reported
Di Marco’s October 30 article identified Minnesota as one of the most active teams pursuing Larkin, citing TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. Sources around the Wild described a significant gap between what Detroit wants and what Minnesota is prepared to offer.
Young centre Danila Yurov has been discussed in speculation about a potential return, but no finalized package involving him has been confirmed. Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt is another valuable young asset; Daily Faceoff reported that Wild sources ruled out making him available for Larkin.
Philadelphia could enter as a facilitator rather than the club acquiring Larkin. Flyers sources told Di Marco they would be willing to absorb Trenin’s deal for the right price and expressed interest in Stramel.
That is a report of willingness and interest, not evidence that Stramel has been formally offered, that Trenin has agreed to move or that a trade is imminent.
Why Minnesota Wants Larkin — and Why Detroit Can Wait
For Minnesota, Larkin would supply another proven top-six centre alongside an established offensive core that includes Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy and Joel Eriksson Ek. He can play significant minutes, contribute on special teams and provide offence beyond a single playoff run.
His career numbers support that case: 278 goals and 649 points in 818 NHL games, including six 30-goal seasons. Larkin had two goals and four assists in 10 games this season before the suspension. That is an unremarkable start but a small sample compared with his established production.
The financial commitment is longer-term. Larkin is signed through 2030–31 at an $8.7 million annual cap hit. Minnesota must judge not only this season’s upgrade but the effect on its future roster construction.
Detroit is balancing a different concern. Trading Larkin for a disappointing return could weaken the club’s next competitive window. Horcoff told NHL.com on October 30 that he is prepared to wait as long as needed for a deal that makes sense. The unpaid suspension adds urgency to the story, not an obligation for Detroit to accept Minnesota’s valuation.
Dylan Larkin Salary Cap: What a Third Team Would Change
On an annualized basis, Larkin’s $8.7 million cap hit minus Trenin’s $3.5 million cap hit equals a $5.2 million net increase for Minnesota if Trenin leaves and Larkin arrives. Without the Trenin departure, the incoming amount would be $8.7 million before any other roster moves.
Philadelphia would instead assume Trenin’s $3.5 million annual cap commitment, extending through 2027–28, and would want compensation for doing so. Stramel’s reported appeal to Philadelphia helps explain why the prospect has appeared in this discussion.
Neither scenario establishes cap compliance: current cap space, LTIR treatment, roster limits, contract timing, and other player movements matter. Trenin’s 10-team no-trade clause also introduces a possible approval issue. These are contract-cap comparisons rather than a completed transaction model.
Dylan Larkin: The Three-Team Cap Equation
What would Philadelphia taking Yakov Trenin’s contract actually change for Minnesota?
HYPOTHETICAL — NO TRADE AGREEMENT REPORTEDMinnesota’s Annual Cap-Hit Comparison
Potential Trenin cap hit absorbed in exchange for compensation. Charlie Stramel is reportedly of interest to Philadelphia.
Cap relief does not satisfy Detroit’s asking price. If Stramel is used to compensate Philadelphia, Minnesota must still assemble a return Detroit accepts.
Method: $8.7M Larkin annual cap hit minus $3.5M Trenin annual cap hit = $5.2M net addition. This comparison assumes Trenin’s entire cap hit leaves Minnesota and no other salaries move. It excludes trade-date proration, LTIR, replacement players, bonuses and roster limits. This does not establish cap compliance.
Contract data: Larkin, Trenin. Reporting: Daily Faceoff. Reviewed October 31, 2026.
Why Philadelphia Cannot Fix Detroit’s Asking Price
This is the central trade problem: Minnesota could pay a prospect to Philadelphia for salary relief and still lack enough value to satisfy Detroit. If Stramel goes to the Flyers, he cannot also go to the Red Wings.
Daily Faceoff reported that Wild sources do not want to include Wallstedt. It also cited an assistant GM’s view that Yurov and Stramel might not be enough for Larkin. These are assessments relayed by a reporter, not confirmed offers or prices agreed by the parties.
Detroit’s own cap flexibility further complicates the case for a broker. The Red Wings may be able to take on salary directly if doing so improves the overall package. Philadelphia is most useful if its participation preserves a better return for Detroit or allows a structure that Detroit would otherwise reject.
My assessment is that Minnesota could face two distinct costs: the price of acquiring Larkin, plus the price of clearing sufficient salary. That second cost makes an already contentious negotiation harder.
What a Hypothetical Three-Team Trade Might Involve
Minnesota: Acquire Larkin, move Trenin’s contract and offer Detroit assets it values. Philadelphia: Take Trenin in return for suitable compensation, potentially involving a prospect. Detroit: Receive a Larkin return meeting its priorities without being forced to accept a salary arrangement it dislikes.
This is a possible structure, not a reported three-way offer. The names involved may change, and additional contracts or assets could be needed. In particular, the known reporting does not establish an agreed return heading to Detroit.
What Happens Next for Dylan Larkin and the Red Wings?
Three developments matter most: whether Detroit changes its valuation or Minnesota improves its proposed return; whether Philadelphia becomes involved in substantive negotiations rather than exploratory discussions; and whether Larkin broadens the destinations he will approve.
Larkin’s no-trade protection remains a significant limitation on Detroit’s options. The Red Wings could also wait for another interested club to present a stronger fit. Horcoff’s public position suggests the team does not plan to settle purely because the suspension has become uncomfortable.
Final Take
The Flyers’ potential involvement makes the Dylan Larkin-to-Minnesota conversation more interesting. It does not make the trade inevitable. Taking Trenin’s $3.5 million cap hit could ease part of Minnesota’s financial burden, but the Wild would still need to find an acceptable hockey package for Detroit.
That’s the key to this rumour: Philadelphia may be able to help finance the deal, but Minnesota still has to afford the asset cost.
