The Winnipeg Jets may have just gained something they desperately needed in the Connor Hellebuyck trade saga: negotiating leverage. And surprisingly, it has very little to do with their three-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender.
Winnipeg defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3–2 on Wednesday night, extending its winning streak to three games and improving to 3-0-1 to begin the 2026–27 NHL season. Kyle Connor scored twice, including the winner with exactly one minute remaining, while Stuart Skinner delivered 32 saves in another impressive performance.
Suddenly, the Jets aren’t looking like a franchise being held hostage by an unresolved trade request.
They’re looking like a team that can win without its former franchise cornerstone.
That distinction matters enormously when discussing Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors.
Sportsnet analyst Sam Cosentino suggested Winnipeg should consider the blockbuster return Vancouver received for Quinn Hughes when evaluating a potential Hellebuyck trade. His reasoning centered on the leverage Winnipeg has gained through its strong start.
But here’s the question that could determine everything: Has Winnipeg’s winning streak actually increased Hellebuyck’s asking price, or has it simply given Kevin Cheveldayoff more time to find the right deal?
Why the Winnipeg Jets’ Winning Streak Changes the Hellebuyck Trade Conversation
Four games don’t make an NHL season. However, they can change the atmosphere surrounding a franchise dealing with a significant distraction.
When Connor Hellebuyck publicly requested a trade in August, the Winnipeg Jets faced an uncomfortable situation. Their longtime No. 1 goaltender wanted a fresh start, and his decision not to report to September’s training camp resulted in a team suspension.
Winnipeg entered the season with questions about its goaltending, its dressing-room stability and whether the organization would be pressured into accepting a less-than-ideal trade package.
Skinner has helped change that conversation.
He stopped 33 shots against Detroit on October 4 and followed that performance with 32 saves against Colorado on October 7. Winnipeg has earned seven of a possible eight standings points.
Those aren’t meaningless results, especially considering Colorado entered Wednesday’s matchup undefeated.
My biggest takeaway is that Skinner doesn’t have to replace Hellebuyck’s peak Vezina-calibre performances. He needs to give the Jets enough reliable goaltending that management can conduct negotiations without feeling the season is slipping away.
So far, he’s accomplished that.

Connor Hellebuyck’s Trade Value Is More Complicated Than His Awards Suggest
It’s tempting to argue that Winnipeg should demand an enormous return simply because Hellebuyck has won three Vezina Trophies and a Hart Trophy.
But there’s another side to the evaluation.
Hellebuyck posted a .925 save percentage and 2.00 goals-against average during his remarkable 2024–25 campaign. Those numbers dropped to a .895 save percentage and 2.86 goals-against average in 2025–26.
That’s a significant one-season decline.
It doesn’t erase his career accomplishments. Hellebuyck also helped Team USA capture Olympic gold in 2026, demonstrating his ability to perform at an elite level under significant pressure.
However, acquiring teams will evaluate both his ceiling and the risks associated with his age and contract.
He’s now 33 years old, carries an $8.5 million annual salary-cap hit and remains under contract through 2030–31.
For a team with Stanley Cup aspirations, that combination creates an interesting debate.
Are you acquiring one of the NHL’s most accomplished goaltenders, or are you committing five seasons of significant cap resources to a player whose most recent NHL campaign raised legitimate questions?
The answer is probably somewhere between those two extremes.
And that’s why I believe Hellebuyck’s market is considerably more complicated than a simple comparison to another superstar trade.
Could Winnipeg Demand a Quinn Hughes-Type Blockbuster?
When Vancouver sent Hughes to Minnesota in December 2025, the Canucks received Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Öhgren and a first-round draft pick.
That’s the type of return that can accelerate a franchise’s next competitive window.
Would Cheveldayoff love a similarly impressive package for Connor Hellebuyck? Absolutely.
But comparing Hughes and Hellebuyck requires context.
Hughes was a 26-year-old elite defenceman when traded. Hellebuyck is an established veteran goaltender with a lengthy contract and an active no-movement clause.
Those differences affect the negotiating process.
Elite goaltending can transform a playoff series, but clubs must also consider salary-cap allocation, the development of their current netminders and whether committing long-term money at that position fits their roster.
The most attractive return for Winnipeg, in my opinion, would include an NHL-ready player, a premium prospect and a high draft selection.
That isn’t a report of an actual offer. It’s an assessment of the type of package Winnipeg should explore.
How Much Is Connor Hellebuyck Really Worth in a Trade?
The key is understanding the difference between a player’s hockey value and his transaction value.
Hellebuyck’s ability and accomplishments remain highly impressive. But his no-movement clause limits where he can be traded without consent.
A smaller number of acceptable destinations could reduce competition between interested clubs.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s strong start gives Cheveldayoff a reason to wait rather than rush.
Those forces pull in opposite directions.
The Jets might believe they’re negotiating from a stronger position, but that doesn’t automatically mean another general manager is suddenly willing to surrender an additional first-round pick.

The $8.5 Million Salary-Cap Question Facing Any Hellebuyck Trade
The NHL’s 2026–27 salary cap is $104 million, meaning Hellebuyck’s $8.5 million annual hit represents approximately 8.17% of a team’s maximum payroll.
That’s a substantial investment for a goaltender, particularly for a Stanley Cup contender already carrying expensive contracts.
One potential negotiating tool would be salary retention.
If Winnipeg agreed to retain 25% of Hellebuyck’s contract, an acquiring team would carry $6.375 million annually instead of $8.5 million. At 50% retention, the acquiring team’s share would fall to $4.25 million.
However, those discounts wouldn’t come cheaply.
Winnipeg would be carrying retained money for the remaining term of the deal, limiting financial flexibility in future seasons.
My preference would be to prioritize the quality of the return rather than immediately offer salary retention.
If another team wants Winnipeg to absorb several million dollars annually, the added compensation needs to justify that commitment.
It’s also important not to treat Hellebuyck’s entire $8.5 million cap hit as automatic new spending money. His suspension and roster accounting already affect Winnipeg’s published salary-cap figures. Actual available room after a trade would depend on the club’s roster, the transaction structure and applicable cap rules.

Why I Wouldn’t Rush a Connor Hellebuyck Trade Right Now
If I were evaluating this situation from Winnipeg’s perspective, I would focus on three things over the next several weeks.
First, can Skinner maintain his performance when the schedule becomes more demanding?
A strong four-game start is encouraging, but Winnipeg needs more evidence before deciding it has solved its long-term goaltending situation.
Second, what happens with the team’s health?
Josh Morrissey suffered an upper-body injury against Colorado. Depending on its severity, that could create another roster challenge and influence the type of player Winnipeg wants in a potential trade.
Third, can the organization establish meaningful competition among teams that Hellebuyck would actually agree to join?
That’s ultimately where trade leverage becomes real.
Speculation about a dozen interested teams means little if the player can veto most of those destinations.
If Winnipeg can secure an established young player, an impact prospect and strong draft capital, I’d seriously consider moving forward.
If the available packages fall short, there’s little reason to make a deal purely to end the headlines.
Has Winnipeg Actually Increased Connor Hellebuyck’s Asking Price?
That’s the central question heading into the next phase of the season.
There is no verified announcement that Winnipeg has officially raised its asking price or agreed to a trade.
What has changed is the environment surrounding the negotiations.
The Jets are winning. Skinner is delivering. Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele are producing important offensive moments, and the organization has collected points in every game.
That gives Cheveldayoff something he didn’t necessarily have when training camp opened: evidence that his team can remain competitive while the Hellebuyck situation continues.
My prediction is that Winnipeg will remain patient unless an offer arrives that materially strengthens the roster for the present and future.
The greatest risk isn’t waiting too long after four games. It’s assuming those four games eliminate the possibility of a longer-term goaltending problem.
The Jets don’t need to win the Connor Hellebuyck trade today. They need to make sure they don’t lose it by rushing tomorrow.
