The Boston Bruins may have accidentally given NHL fans one of the most fascinating glimpses of their offseason trade plans, and it involves Vancouver Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek.
During the Bruins’ latest episode of Behind the B, cameras followed general manager Don Sweeney and Boston’s front office through the opening of NHL free agency. But in the background of one shot, a screen appears to show something that probably was not intended for public consumption: a potential trade involving Hronek and the Vancouver Canucks.
The framework reportedly had Boston acquiring Hronek while Vancouver received Bruins defence prospect Liam Pettersson and first-round draft picks in 2027 and 2028. Multiple outlets have interpreted the blurry screen that way, although The Hockey News read the second selection as a 2029 first-rounder. That uncertainty matters because nobody in the episode actually discusses the Hronek proposal on camera.
Still, another detail makes this much more interesting than a random trade-board exercise.
What the Boston Bruins’ Filip Hronek Trade Proposal Revealed
Elsewhere on that same Bruins screen was a proposed trade sending Joonas Korpisalo to the New York Rangers, a move that ultimately happened along with a Connor Clifton contract projection that came reasonably close to the deal Boston eventually completed. That does not prove the Hronek transaction reached formal negotiations, but it strongly suggests the screen contained genuine front-office planning rather than fictional trade ideas.
That distinction is where I think this story becomes genuinely interesting.
Boston clearly had reason to investigate a player like Hronek. He is a right-shot defenceman capable of moving the puck, playing heavy minutes and contributing offensively. The 28-year-old finished the 2025-26 season with eight goals, 41 assists and 49 points in 82 games, establishing a career high in points while averaging significant minutes in virtually every situation.
From my perspective, the proposed price tells us almost as much about Boston as it does about Hronek. A prospect plus two first-round picks is not exploratory bargain shopping. If that package was genuinely being considered by Sweeney’s front office, Boston viewed Hronek as a significant piece rather than simply another second-pair defender.
Filip Hronek’s Three-Year Scoring Trend
Hronek’s scoring has been remarkably stable when healthy. He produced 48 points in 2023-24, 33 in an injury-shortened 61-game 2024-25 season and then 49 last year.
But the Bruins were not simply buying points. Right-shot defencemen who can handle top-pair minutes are difficult to acquire, particularly when they’re locked into long-term contracts.
Why Filip Hronek’s Contract Changes the Trade Equation
Hronek carries a $7.25 million cap hit through 2031-32. The deal also contains a full no-movement clause through the 2027-28 season before switching to a modified no-trade clause featuring a 15-team no-trade list. That means Hronek currently controls whether any deal can happen.
That may have been one of the biggest obstacles to Boston ever completing this move.
Hronek recently reaffirmed his commitment to Vancouver, saying, “I committed here and signed a contract here.” He also expressed optimism that Vancouver can build something meaningful despite entering a rebuilding phase.
That is considerably different from a player privately pushing his team to explore a trade.

Boston currently projects to have approximately $5.39 million in 2026-27 cap space, while Hronek carries his $7.25 million cap hit. Simply adding Hronek to today’s roster would therefore leave Boston approximately $1.86 million short before accounting for another roster transaction.
However, Boston later added Will Borgen at $4.1 million and Connor Clifton at $2.25 million. If Hronek had been acquired instead of one of those players, the calculation changes dramatically.
This is why I would not view Hronek’s salary as something that necessarily killed the trade. Boston could have constructed its defence differently if Hronek had arrived before Borgen and Clifton.

The reported package is where Vancouver’s decision becomes fascinating.
My read is that two first-round picks plus Pettersson represents a serious offer, but not necessarily an irresistible one for Vancouver.
Hronek is in his prime, plays the harder-to-find side of defence and is under contract for six more seasons. Vancouver therefore has little reason to sell him simply because it is rebuilding. The Canucks can afford to wait for an offer that clearly outweighs the value of keeping him around to stabilize a younger defence.
There is another factor: Hronek’s no-movement clause means Vancouver cannot simply auction him to the highest bidder today.
Did Boston Actually Make the Filip Hronek Offer?
That remains the unanswered question.
The screen confirms that a Hronek-to-Boston framework was being considered somewhere within the Bruins’ offseason planning. It does not tell us whether Don Sweeney formally offered it, Vancouver proposed it to Boston, or Boston’s hockey operations department was simply modelling a potential deal internally.
What has changed since the original speculation is that we now know Hronek remains publicly committed to Vancouver, while Boston moved forward by acquiring other right-shot defensive options.
So instead of viewing this as evidence that a Hronek trade is imminent, I think the bigger takeaway is the apparent valuation.
If Boston really was prepared to discuss a prospect and two first-round picks, that gives us a fascinating benchmark for how highly one NHL front office may value Filip Hronek.
And if the Vancouver Canucks ever decide to listen seriously, that benchmark suggests the asking price is not going to be cheap.
