Patrik Laine to the Philadelphia Flyers is becoming one of the more fascinating possibilities remaining on the NHL free-agent market, and unlike many August rumors, there is some legitimate history connecting the two sides.
Back in March, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Montreal Canadiens explored moving money before the NHL trade deadline and specifically revealed there had been discussions about Laine landing in either Philadelphia or Toronto. Those talks never produced a deal, but they established something important: the Flyers had at least explored a scenario involving Laine.
Fast-forward to August, and the circumstances have changed dramatically. Laine is an unrestricted free agent, Philadelphia wouldn’t have to surrender a draft pick or prospect, and his previous $8.7 million cap hit is gone. As of August 8, there has been no credible report indicating the Flyers have made Laine a contract offer or are currently negotiating with him. But with the 28-year-old still unsigned, this is a connection worth watching.
Why Patrik Laine Could Make Sense for the Philadelphia Flyers
The biggest reason I would consider Laine if I were running the Flyers is simple: the power play.
Philadelphia finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 15.7 percent power play, last in the NHL. The problem is hardly new. NHL.com noted before last season that Philadelphia had already finished in the bottom three on the power play for four consecutive seasons.
Laine might be one of the most specialized potential solutions available.
During the 2024-25 season in Montreal, Laine scored 20 goals in only 52 games, with a remarkable 15 coming on the power play. That means 75 percent of his goals that season were scored with the man advantage.
Put his right-handed shot into a power-play setup featuring Matvei Michkov, Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecny, and opposing penalty kills suddenly have another shooting threat they cannot ignore.
That’s where I see the appeal.
The Flyers wouldn’t be signing Laine expecting him to become their best all-around forward. They would be buying one very specific weapon: a shot capable of changing how teams defend Philadelphia’s power play.
Patrik Laine Career NHL Stats
| Type | GP | G | A | P | +/- |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Season | 537 | 224 | 198 | 422 | -75 |
| Playoffs | 26 | 8 | 9 | 17 | 1 |
Laine Still Has the Shot That Once Produced 44 Goals
It’s easy to forget how dominant Laine once looked.
The Winnipeg Jets selected him second overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, and in only his second NHL season he exploded for 44 goals and 70 points in 82 games.
He hasn’t approached 44 goals since, but the Montreal season provided evidence that his finishing ability hasn’t completely disappeared.
The much bigger question is availability.
Laine underwent surgery in October 2025 to repair a core-muscle injury and was initially expected to miss three to four months. He ultimately appeared in only five games during the 2025-26 season, recording one assist. NHL.com reported after Montreal’s season that Laine had been medically cleared and practiced regularly late in the year and during the playoffs.
That combination: elite shooting history paired with substantial health risk is exactly why his next contract should look nothing like the $8.7 million AAV deal that just expired.
Our Flyers-Laine Fit Score: 72/100
My NHLTradeRumor.com Flyers-Laine Fit Score comes in at 72 out of 100.
| Category | Score | My assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Power-play fit | 19/20 | Philadelphia desperately needs another legitimate shooting threat |
| Goal-scoring upside | 18/20 | The 44-goal ceiling is long gone, but his shot remains dangerous |
| Contract/cap flexibility | 18/20 | As a UFA, he costs Philadelphia no trade assets |
| Roster opportunity | 9/20 | Philadelphia already has significant winger depth |
| Health/availability | 8/20 | Five games last season creates substantial risk |
| Overall | 72/100 | Worth exploring only on a short-term, low-risk contract |
That last part matters.
Philadelphia doesn’t have an obvious need for another winger. The Flyers already have Michkov, Konecny, Tyson Foerster, Owen Tippett, Porter Martone and Alex Bump competing for meaningful roles. Their late-season lineup showed just how crowded the organization has become on the wings.
Laine therefore cannot be signed simply because his name is intriguing.
There has to be a defined role.
Philadelphia Has the Cap Space to Take the Gamble
The financial side is much easier to understand than it would have been at the trade deadline.
PuckPedia currently projects Philadelphia with approximately $14.88 million in 2026-27 cap space.
Here’s my simple NHLTradeRumor.com cap scenario:
If Philadelphia signed Laine to a hypothetical one-year contract carrying a $2 million base cap hit, the Flyers would still have approximately $12.88 million in projected room.
At $2.5 million, they would still have approximately $12.38 million.
Those are hypothetical calculations and don’t account for later roster moves or other cap adjustments, but they illustrate the larger point: Philadelphia can afford the gamble without compromising its entire roster plan.
That’s very different from absorbing the final year of Laine’s old $8.7 million contract.
The Biggest Reason the Flyers Should Be Careful
My hesitation isn’t really the money.
It’s ice time.
A healthy Laine needs offensive-zone opportunities and power-play usage to justify occupying a roster spot. Signing him and then putting him on a fourth line for 11 minutes per game accomplishes very little.
Philadelphia also needs to continue creating opportunities for Michkov, Martone, Foerster and its other young forwards.
That’s why my preferred approach would be one year and minimal guaranteed risk.
If Laine arrives healthy and rediscovers even part of the player who scored 20 goals in 52 games for Montreal, Daniel Briere could have found one of the better bargain signings of the offseason.
If it doesn’t work, Philadelphia walks away after the season.
Is the Patrik Laine to Philadelphia Flyers Rumor Legit?
The answer requires some nuance.
Yes, the Philadelphia Flyers connection is legitimate historically. Friedman confirmed there were discussions involving Laine and Philadelphia before the 2026 trade deadline. That report ultimately proved accurate in one important respect: the discussions did not result in a transaction, Laine remained with Montreal and subsequently reached unrestricted free agency.
What’s not confirmed is that Philadelphia is actively pursuing him today.
A July analysis from The Hockey Writers argued Philadelphia should take a chance and highlighted Finnish discussion of the Flyers as an intriguing destination, helping bring the connection back into focus. But that’s analysis rather than confirmation of active negotiations.
For me, that puts this rumor in the “plausible, but not imminent” category.
The Flyers have history with the player, they have cap space, and Laine addresses a very specific weakness. Those ingredients make Philadelphia a believable landing spot.
Whether Briere believes that potential reward is worth taking a roster spot away from one of his younger forwards is the real question.
