The contract will make him the NHL’s highest-paid player when it begins in 2027-28, surpassing the $18 million AAV Leo Carlsson received after the Anaheim Ducks matched Philadelphia’s offer sheet. Celebrini earned his payday after recording a Sharks franchise-record 115 points, including 45 goals and 70 assists, over 82 games last season.
This is the type of transaction that reaches far beyond San Jose. Celebrini’s deal immediately becomes a comparison point for Quinn Hughes, Alex DeBrincat, Drake Batherson and other prominent players approaching unrestricted free agency.
My biggest takeaway is the five-year term. San Jose gets Celebrini’s prime seasons, but Celebrini will still be young enough to negotiate another enormous contract when this agreement expires. The Sharks gained certainty without receiving the eight-year cost control teams traditionally seek from franchise players.
Macklin Celebrini’s Contract Resets the NHL Salary Market
Celebrini had already indicated that he wanted to stay in San Jose, saying after the season that he loved playing there and wanted to commit to the organization. His new extension confirms that those earlier comments accurately reflected his intentions.
In that sense, the Sharks avoided the uncertainty that often surrounds elite players entering the final year of an entry-level contract. General manager Mike Grier can now construct the roster knowing exactly what his franchise centre will cost.
The challenge will be building sufficient depth around him.
Celebrini was dominant last season, but San Jose still missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Sharks improved to 39 wins and 86 points after finishing with only 20 wins and 52 points in 2024-25, demonstrating that their rebuild is accelerating. However, an $18.8 million cap hit will require Grier to find value contracts throughout the lineup, particularly as Will Smith and other members of San Jose’s young core become eligible for raises.
From my perspective, Celebrini is one of the few young players capable of justifying this type of commitment. He did not merely produce strong sophomore numbers. He finished with 115 points while becoming the player opponents specifically designed their defensive coverage to stop.
Red Wings Rumors Intensify Around Larkin and DeBrincat
While San Jose has created long-term certainty, the Detroit Red Wings remain surrounded by unanswered questions.
Steve Yzerman was removed from his role as general manager on July 15, although he reportedly continues handling day-to-day duties while Detroit searches for his replacement. Meanwhile, Dylan Larkin’s reported trade request remains unresolved, restricted free-agent defenceman Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned and the organization still needs additional scoring.
Alex DeBrincat’s future has also entered the rumor conversation because he can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. However, the current reporting suggests DeBrincat would prefer to remain in Detroit if the Red Wings offer fair market value.
DeBrincat carries a $7.875 million cap hit and has scored 107 goals since joining Detroit, including 41 last season. Those numbers make an extension logical, but Celebrini and Carlsson have dramatically changed the upper end of the salary market.
My read is that DeBrincat is far more likely to sign an extension than be traded. He is a Michigan native, produces consistently and appears comfortable in Detroit. The more significant uncertainty is Larkin. Until the Red Wings resolve their captain’s situation and hire a permanent general manager, nearly every other major roster decision will carry an additional layer of risk.
Quinn Hughes and Drake Batherson Could Be Next
Celebrini’s extension also arrives as the Minnesota Wild prepare for important talks with Quinn Hughes.
Wild general manager Bill Guerin is expected to meet with Hughes and his representatives this week. Minnesota reportedly prefers an extension of between five and eight years, although a shorter agreement could allow Hughes to align his future with his brother Jack Hughes’ contract in New Jersey. Quinn currently carries a $7.85 million cap hit and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The Wild have already committed $17 million annually to Kirill Kaprizov. Adding another contract approaching the top of the NHL salary scale would give Minnesota two elite building blocks, but it would also concentrate a significant percentage of the payroll in two players.
Ottawa faces a similar decision with Drake Batherson. The Senators and Batherson reportedly remain far apart in extension talks, with some executives believing the winger could command between $10 million and $11 million annually. Batherson currently earns $4.975 million and is eligible for unrestricted free agency after the coming season. Both sides reportedly want to continue the relationship, but agreeing on value will be difficult.
