Adam Fantilli has not publicly confirmed a demand exceeding $14 million per season, but the Columbus Blue Jackets can no longer dismiss that number as unrealistic. Leo Carlsson’s five-year, $90 million offer sheet dramatically changed the negotiating environment for the NHL’s best young centers, and Fantilli is now positioned to benefit.
The immediate takeaway is that Columbus should still be able to retain Fantilli, but doing so could consume nearly all of its remaining salary-cap flexibility. The Blue Jackets currently have approximately $23.27 million available. If projected arbitration contracts for Jet Greaves and Cole Sillinger cost a combined $8.5 million, Columbus would be left with roughly $14.77 million before signing Fantilli. That does not leave much breathing room if his camp is targeting something close to $14 million or potentially more.
My expectation is that Fantilli remains with the Blue Jackets. However, the leverage in these negotiations has shifted heavily toward the player, and waiting much longer could make an already expensive contract even more difficult for Columbus to manage.
Why Adam Fantilli’s Contract Price Has Changed
Brian Hedger of The Columbus Dispatch reports that Carlsson’s offer sheet has increased the cost of re-signing Fantilli. Hedger previously believed a deal carrying an average annual value between $10 million and $12 million might be attainable, but now considers Fantilli’s eventual price much harder to predict.
That market shift makes sense. Carlsson and Fantilli were selected second and third overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, and both are viewed as potential franchise centers. Carlsson receiving an $18 million AAV does not automatically make Fantilli an $18 million player, but it gives Fantilli’s representatives a powerful negotiating comparable.
Fantilli recorded 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points in 82 games last season. He also generated a 52 percent expected-goal share and a 52 percent shot-attempt share, suggesting that his underlying play was stronger than his raw point total might indicate. At only 21, Columbus is not merely paying for what Fantilli is today. It would be buying the seasons in which he is expected to become a legitimate first-line center and offensive cornerstone.

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ Salary-Cap Squeeze
Here is where the situation becomes uncomfortable for general manager Don Waddell. Columbus currently has approximately $23.27 million in projected cap space, but Greaves and Sillinger have filed for salary arbitration. AFP Analytics reportedly projects one-year awards of approximately $4.3 million for Greaves and $4.2 million for Sillinger.
Using those estimates, the Blue Jackets’ available space would fall to approximately $14.77 million:
- Current projected cap space: $23.27 million
- Projected Jet Greaves contract: $4.3 million
- Projected Cole Sillinger contract: $4.2 million
- Estimated remaining space: $14.77 million
A $14 million contract for Fantilli would leave Columbus with only about $770,000. A $14.5 million contract would reduce that cushion to approximately $270,000, while a $15 million deal would put the Blue Jackets roughly $230,000 over the cap based on the current roster projection.
Those calculations are not a prediction of the final arbitration awards, and Columbus could create room through trades or roster assignments. They do, however, demonstrate why the order in which these contracts are completed matters. Every additional dollar awarded to Greaves or Sillinger reduces the flexibility available for Fantilli.
Could Adam Fantilli Sign an Offer Sheet?
Fantilli remains eligible to sign an offer sheet, but the threat may be greater than the probability. Any offer carrying an AAV above $11,939,166 would require the signing team to surrender four first-round draft picks if Columbus declined to match. That is an enormous acquisition cost before even considering a salary above $14 million.
A rival team would need substantial cap space, control of its required original draft picks and confidence that Fantilli can develop into a true franchise center. More importantly, Fantilli would have to be interested in leaving Columbus. An opposing general manager cannot force him to sign an offer sheet.
The Philadelphia Flyers were initially viewed as a logical threat after Anaheim matched their offer sheet for Carlsson. Subsequent reporting, however, indicated that Philadelphia was not planning to pivot directly to Fantilli. That does not eliminate the possibility of another team testing Columbus, but the field of realistic bidders appears small.
My personal read is that Fantilli’s camp benefits more from the possibility of an offer sheet than it would from actually signing one. The threat gives his representatives additional leverage without requiring Fantilli to leave an organization that has already made him its top-line center.
What Should Columbus Offer Adam Fantilli?
If Columbus can secure Fantilli for eight years at an AAV between $13 million and $14 million, the contract may look expensive immediately but become more manageable as the salary cap continues to rise. A shorter bridge contract would lower the immediate cost, although it would also allow Fantilli to negotiate again when he is older, more productive and potentially much more expensive.
The Blue Jackets cannot evaluate this contract strictly through Fantilli’s current 59-point production. First-line centers rarely become available, and Columbus has spent years searching for one with Fantilli’s combination of size, speed, scoring ability and long-term upside. Losing him over a disagreement of $1 million or $2 million annually would create a much larger organizational problem than paying a premium to keep him.
There is still no confirmation that Fantilli is formally seeking more than $14 million. What has been confirmed is that he remains unsigned, Columbus has enough room to match a major offer sheet, and the Carlsson contract has created a considerably more favourable negotiating environment for Fantilli. Until his signature is secured, this will remain the most important storyline of the Blue Jackets’ offseason.
