The offseason is officially here, but the hockey world never truly sleeps. If you are looking for the NHL news and hockey news that is actively shaping the landscape for the 2026-27 season, today has delivered some massive storylines. From a long-standing contract stalemate finally reaching its conclusion in Ottawa, to a devastating injury blow for a Western Conference contender, and a championship celebration up in Toronto, the news cycle is moving fast.
Let’s dive into the biggest stories happening across the league today.
Ottawa Senators Allow Alex Formenton to Become a UFA
In a move that officially severs a years-long tie, the Ottawa Senators have allowed winger Alex Formenton to become an unrestricted free agent. The organization removed him from their reserve list, effectively ending their exclusive negotiating rights and allowing the 26-year-old to sign with any team.
Formenton has not played in the NHL since the 2021-22 season. Following the expiration of his entry-level contract, a lengthy stalemate ensued, resulting in Formenton playing overseas in Switzerland for HC Ambri-Piotta. While the Senators had reportedly tried to shop his rights in the past for draft capital, they were unable to find a suitor. Now that he is officially a UFA, it remains to be seen if another NHL franchise will offer him a contract to return to North America, especially as he and four other players were recently acquitted following the high-profile 2018 Canadian World Junior legal trial.
Anaheim Ducks’ Troy Terry to Miss Start of Season
In a tough blow for the Anaheim Ducks, star forward Troy Terry will miss the beginning of the 2026-27 NHL season. The team announced that Terry underwent successful surgery on June 9 to repair a hip impingement and a labral tear.
The recovery timeline for this type of procedure is estimated at five to six months. This means Terry likely won’t see the ice again until around Thanksgiving or early December, forcing him to miss all of training camp and anywhere from 15 to 30 regular-season games. Terry had a stellar year, recording 57 points in 61 games and adding 11 points in 12 playoff games during the Ducks’ impressive run to the second round. Anaheim enters the offseason with significant cap space, and general manager Pat Verbeek will now have to decide if they need to acquire a top-six forward to fill the void Terry leaves behind.
Toronto Marlies Capture the 2026 Calder Cup
On a much brighter note, the Toronto Marlies are your 2026 Calder Cup Champions. The AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Carolina Hurricanes‘ affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, in five games to secure the title on home ice at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.
This marks the second Calder Cup in Marlies franchise history, their first coming back in 2018. Goaltender Artur Akhtyamov was named the playoff MVP, taking home the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy after posting a stellar .923 save percentage. With top prospects developing a winning pedigree, the Maple Leafs’ front office will undoubtedly be looking to see which of these AHL champions are ready to make the jump to the NHL roster this fall.
