Hockey fans are in for a Sunday night treat as two of the league’s hottest teams face off in a non-conference battle. The New York Islanders head to the high altitude of Denver to take on the powerhouse Colorado Avalanche. Both teams are riding significant winning streaks, making this a must-watch game for any NHL fan.
The Islanders, led by head coach Patrick Roy, are on a four-game winning streak, having just scraped by the Utah Mammoth in a 3-2 overtime thriller on Friday. The Avs, meanwhile, are arguably the league’s most dangerous team, sitting at the top of the Central Division with a 12-1-5 record and riding a five-game win streak of their own after dispatching the Buffalo Sabres 6-3.
This game has all the makings of a classic: a gritty, structured defensive team in the Islanders versus the high-flying, relentless offense of the Avalanche.

Team Leaders, Injuries, and Game Preview
The New York Islanders are being powered by their captain, Bo Horvat, who leads the team with 12 goals and 23 points. He’s followed closely by playmaker Jonathan Drouin (11 assists). The Islanders will be without winger Pierre Engvall, who is out for the season, and backup goalie Semyon Varlamov (knee).
The Colorado Avalanche are an offensive juggernaut, led by the perennial Hart Trophy candidate Nathan MacKinnon, who has been electric with 14 goals and a league-leading 33 points. Not far behind is superstar defenseman Cale Makar, who has 18 assists. The Avs will be missing a key piece of their top-six, as Valeri Nichushkin is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
When I look at the betting line for this game (Line: Colorado -270, O/U: 6.5), my first instinct is that -270 is steep, but it’s hard to bet against the Avalanche at home. They are dominant at Ball Arena, and the Islanders are playing the second night of a back-to-back on the road. The Islanders’ defensive style could keep it close, but I feel the Avalanche’s speed and elite scoring will be the difference. I’m taking the Avalanche to win, and I’m predicting a 4-3 final score, which just hits the over.
