Matchup Preview: What to Expect
The Montreal Canadiens (10-6-2) come into this game stinging from a three-game losing streak, capped by a 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. The team’s promising start has been hampered by a significant string of injuries to key players.
The Columbus Blue Jackets (9-7-2) are coming off a weekend game against the New York Rangers and have been playing solid hockey. Their last recorded result was an exciting 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, showcasing an offense that can hang with the league’s best.
Key Players & Injury Report
The injury bug has hit the Montreal Canadiens hard. They will be without forwards Kirby Dach (fractured foot, 4-6 weeks), Alex Newhook (fractured ankle, 4 months), and Patrik Laine (core-muscle surgery, 3-4 months), as well as key defenseman Kaiden Guhle (adductor surgery, 8-10 weeks). This puts immense pressure on captain Nick Suzuki (21 points) and goal-scorer Cole Caufield (18 points) to carry the offense, with rookie defenseman Lane Hutson (14 points) providing a spark from the blue line.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are also missing their captain, Boone Jenner, who is on the IR with an upper-body injury. Veteran defenseman Erik Gudbranson (hip) is also sidelined. Columbus will rely on its own young talent, led by the dynamic Kirill Marchenko (20 points), Dmitri Voronkov (14 points), and 2023 3rd-overall pick Adam Fantilli (12 points) to provide the scoring punch.
My Game Prediction & Betting Odds
When I look at this matchup, my first thought goes to the injuries. Montreal is missing a huge chunk of its secondary scoring and a top-four defenseman. Columbus is without its captain, which is a big loss in leadership, but their core scoring group is largely intact.
The betting odds have the line at Columbus -115 and the O/U at 5.5. I feel that -115 for the home team is pretty modest, likely because the Canadiens, when healthy, are a fast team that can surprise. But they aren’t healthy. The Blue Jackets are at home and their offense is clicking. I think the Habs will struggle to contain Marchenko and Fantilli, and while Suzuki and Caufield might pot a couple, the depth just isn’t there for Montreal right now.
I’m taking the Blue Jackets to win this one. The 5.5 O/U is tempting, and I lean towards the over. My final score prediction is a 4-2 victory for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
