The Dylan Larkin trade rumors never really disappeared. Now, with NHL training camps approaching and the Detroit Red Wings still searching for their next hockey-operations leader, the Dallas Stars are becoming impossible to ignore again.
There is an important distinction here: there is no fresh report saying Detroit and Dallas are currently negotiating a Larkin trade. But Dallas remains one of the destinations Larkin reportedly added to his approved trade list, and Bleacher Report identified the Red Wings captain on September 8 as one of the notable players who could still be moved before camps open September 16–17.
That is enough to make this situation worth watching.
Earlier discussions between Detroit and Dallas reportedly reached the point where the Red Wings asked about Wyatt Johnston. Dallas wasn’t interested in moving him and reportedly countered with Jason Robertson. Nothing came together, but the circumstances have changed since then. Robertson has subsequently signed a one-year, $12 million contract, while Larkin remains a Red Wing with his trade request unresolved.
And that creates the fascinating question heading into camp:
Could the framework of a Dallas-Detroit blockbuster come back to life?
Why the Dallas Stars Still Make Sense for Dylan Larkin
Larkin isn’t a distressed asset.
The 30-year-old center produced 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games last season, averaged more than 20 minutes per game and won 52.9 percent of his faceoffs. He remains Detroit’s captain and is still listed as such by the NHL entering the new season.
What Dallas would be buying is certainty down the middle.
Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31, giving the Stars five seasons of contractual control beginning with 2026-27.
From my perspective, that’s where the Stars angle becomes more interesting than it was earlier this summer.
Dallas already possesses elite offensive talent. Mikko Rantanen, Roope Hintz and Johnston give the Stars considerable firepower. Larkin wouldn’t need to arrive and become the franchise. He could simply do what he does best: attack with speed, win draws, play in every situation and give Dallas another experienced center capable of handling difficult matchups.
The problem isn’t whether Larkin could help Dallas.
It’s figuring out who Dallas would be willing to give Detroit.
The Salary-Cap Problem Dallas Must Solve in a Dylan Larkin Trade
The financial side makes a small trade almost impossible.
PuckPedia currently projects the Stars at approximately $105.36 million against a $104 million ceiling, or roughly $1.36 million over the cap. Detroit, meanwhile, has approximately $19.57 million in projected cap space.
Adding Larkin’s $8.7 million without removing salary would put Dallas roughly $10.06 million above the ceiling.
That means this isn’t a “prospect and draft pick for Larkin” transaction unless additional contracts are moved.

Projected space becomes approximately -$10.06M.
Dallas improves its position by $3.30M and projects to approximately +$1.94M before replacement-roster adjustments.
That doesn’t mean Robertson-for-Larkin is about to happen.
It does mean that from a pure salary-cap standpoint, Robertson is the cleanest major Dallas contract to build a hypothetical Larkin framework around.
Robertson is coming off a spectacular 45-goal, 96-point season, while Johnston scored 45 goals and 86 points. Dallas has already reportedly rejected Detroit’s request for Johnston, which makes it difficult to imagine the Stars suddenly reversing course on a 23-year-old center signed through 2029-30.
Robertson is different.
His one-year contract takes him to unrestricted free agency next summer. Jim Nill has publicly called Robertson a cornerstone and expressed excitement about having him back, so there should be no suggestion Dallas is presently shopping him. But the short contract means his situation will inevitably remain part of the Stars’ longer-term roster calculus.

The hockey fit is believable. The transaction is difficult.
Dallas is reportedly an approved destination. Larkin provides term and positional versatility. But Detroit’s reported pursuit of Johnston showed that the Red Wings aren’t interested in simply dumping their captain for cap relief.
Why Training Camp Could Finally Force a Dylan Larkin Decision
Perhaps the most interesting development isn’t coming out of Dallas at all.
It’s coming from Detroit.
Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager in July and remains with the organization as a senior adviser. Yet as of September 8, the Red Wings still haven’t appointed their next hockey-operations leader. Detroit Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg, who had been connected to the vacancy, withdrew from consideration on September 7.
That creates an unusual situation.
Detroit is approaching training camp with its captain having requested a trade and without a permanent GM in place to make one of the franchise’s most consequential roster decisions.
My expectation is that Detroit should not lower its price simply because camp is approaching.
Larkin has five years remaining on his contract. There is no rental-player deadline forcing the Red Wings into a bad deal. If Dallas won’t move the type of young cornerstone Detroit wants, the Red Wings have every reason to wait.
The pressure instead falls on Larkin.
If his priority remains joining a Stanley Cup contender, expanding his list beyond Dallas, Minnesota, Vegas and Florida may ultimately be the step that unlocks the market. Bleacher Report reached a similar conclusion in its September 8 examination of potential pre-camp trades, suggesting an expanded list could improve Detroit’s ability to find an acceptable return.
Could Jason Robertson Become the Wild Card?
This is the part of the situation I’ll be watching most closely.
Dallas did not want to give Detroit Wyatt Johnston. That’s understandable.
Johnston is 23, scored 45 goals last season and carries an $8.4 million cap hit on a contract running through 2029-30. He’s precisely the type of young core player a contender normally refuses to trade.
Robertson’s situation isn’t identical.
He is the superior offensive producer right now, but his $12 million deal lasts only one season. Detroit would therefore have to be extremely confident Robertson could be retained beyond 2026-27 before treating him as the centerpiece of a Larkin transaction.
That is why a straight one-for-one swap still doesn’t strike me as the obvious solution.
Detroit would be exchanging five years of certainty for one.
Dallas would be exchanging its leading scorer for a center.
Both organizations would have to believe the structural change makes them better—not merely that the salaries fit.
The Bottom Line on Dylan Larkin and the Dallas Stars
There is no evidence this morning that a Dylan Larkin trade to Dallas is imminent.
That distinction matters.
What we do have is a legitimate sequence of events: Larkin requested a trade; Dallas was reportedly added to his approved destinations; Detroit and Dallas previously discussed a deal; the Red Wings asked for Johnston; Dallas reportedly countered with Robertson; no agreement was reached; and Larkin remains available enough to feature prominently in September’s pre-training-camp trade conversation.
That makes Dallas more than a random hypothetical.
And with training camp now days away, the unresolved question is whether the Stars remain merely a team Larkin would accept—or whether Detroit’s next hockey-operations leader eventually decides there is a deal worth reopening.
For now, I’d put it this way:
Dallas makes sense for Dylan Larkin. Dylan Larkin makes sense for Dallas. Finding a trade that makes equal sense for the Detroit Red Wings is still the problem.
