After speculation connecting Quinn Hughes and the New Jersey Devils picked up steam, league sources are now strongly pushing back on the idea that the Minnesota Wild are engaged in trade talks with New Jersey. Minnesota’s priority remains signing the superstar defenseman to a new contract, even though NHL insider Elliotte Friedman acknowledged this week that negotiations have taken longer than expected and suggested there haven’t been many recent talks.
Elsewhere, Victor Hedman says he is healthy and ready to return to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Erik Karlsson continues to be connected to Toronto, but importantly, as a future prediction rather than evidence of current negotiations, and Calgary is reportedly giving Alex Nylander an NHL training-camp opportunity.
For hockey fans trying to separate legitimate NHL News from late-August speculation, Wednesday provided several important updates.
Latest NHL News: Quinn Hughes Trade Rumor Gets a Reality Check
Recent speculation suggesting the Wild could move Hughes to New Jersey has not been substantiated. Michael Russo’s reporting, as relayed Wednesday, says league sources were emphatically dismissing the idea that Minnesota and New Jersey are engaged in Hughes trade discussions. Minnesota instead remains focused on getting Hughes extended.
That does not mean there is nothing to watch.
Friedman said Tuesday that the length of the negotiations has surprised him and that he would become concerned if Hughes remains unsigned when the season begins. Hughes is entering the final year of his current deal carrying a $7.85 million cap hit, and the combination of contract term and a rapidly rising salary cap could be more important than the raw dollar figure.
Minnesota Wild Salary Cap Reality Check
Minnesota currently projects to have approximately $1.15 million in 2026-27 cap space, while PuckPedia projects nearly $45.98 million for 2027-28 before future contracts are added. The league’s 2026-27 upper limit is officially $104 million.

My observation: the biggest issue here isn’t Minnesota’s ability to pay Hughes. It’s structuring a deal that makes sense for both sides. The Wild have major future flexibility, while Hughes has every incentive to think carefully about term in an environment where the salary cap keeps climbing.
Erik Karlsson Maple Leafs Rumor Is a Prediction, Not a Trade Report
Erik Karlsson’s name is also generating significant NHL trade rumor traffic.
Friedman discussed a source’s prediction that Karlsson could eventually become a Maple Leaf, potentially around the trade deadline depending on how Pittsburgh and Toronto’s seasons unfold.
But there is an important distinction: there is currently no indication Pittsburgh is actively shopping Karlsson or Toronto is actively negotiating for him.
That doesn’t make the scenario uninteresting.
If Pittsburgh falls out of contention and Karlsson becomes available, Toronto would be an obvious team to watch. A puck-moving defenseman with Karlsson’s offensive instincts could dramatically alter a playoff power play.
For now, though, I’d label it plausible future speculation rather than an active NHL trade rumor. That’s exactly the kind of distinction a credible NHL News story should make.
Victor Hedman Says He’s Ready to Return to the Lightning
There is also encouraging news out of Tampa Bay.
Victor Hedman told NHL.com he is preparing for his 18th NHL season feeling healthy physically and mentally after taking personal leave late last season. Hedman has not played since March 19 and recorded 17 points in 33 games during a difficult 2025-26 campaign.
Hedman said he feels “super fresh, hungry and super motivated” heading toward training camp.
From a hockey standpoint, that is a massive development for Tampa Bay. A healthy Hedman still changes how the Lightning transition the puck, run their power play and manage difficult minutes against elite forwards.
Alex Nylander Reportedly Getting Calgary Flames PTO
Another fresh Wednesday development has Alex Nylander reportedly heading home to Calgary.
The Flames are expected to bring the Calgary-born winger to training camp on a professional tryout. Nylander is coming off an excellent AHL season in Toronto, producing 24 goals and 53 points in 65 games for the Calder Cup champion Marlies.
This is a low-risk bet I like for Calgary.
Nylander has always possessed NHL-level offensive skill. The question has been whether he can provide enough consistency away from the puck to hold an everyday NHL job. A PTO gives Calgary an inexpensive opportunity to find out.
Blues Prospect Matthew Mayich Remains Hospitalized
On a much more serious note, St. Louis Blues draft pick Matthew Mayich remained hospitalized Wednesday after collapsing during an outdoor offseason workout last Thursday. Paramedics described the incident as heat-related, and Arizona State University is investigating the circumstances surrounding the workout.
Mayich, a sixth-round Blues selection in 2023, transferred to Arizona State for the upcoming season. Blues president of hockey operations Doug Armstrong said the organization is keeping Mayich close in its thoughts as he continues receiving medical treatment.
