The biggest NHL news today is no longer limited to which players have signed new contracts. The Philadelphia Flyers’ stunning five-year, $90 million offer sheet for Anaheim Ducks center Leo Carlsson is beginning to influence negotiations across the league, while Jason Robertson headlines a group of 15 restricted free agents who have filed for salary arbitration.
Meanwhile, the Anaheim Ducks have secured defenseman Pavel Mintyukov on a five-year extension, the Pittsburgh Penguins have rewarded Egor Chinakhov’s breakout season, and Seattle Kraken center Shane Wright is being mentioned as a possible fallback option for the New Jersey Devils.
The most important takeaway is that the NHL’s restricted free-agent market has changed. Offer sheets are no longer an offseason afterthought. Philadelphia has forced Anaheim to choose between matching an $18 million annual cap hit or accepting four first-round draft picks. That decision could also affect future negotiations involving Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Cutter Gauthier and Macklin Celebrini.
From my perspective, Carlsson’s contract does not automatically make every young star worth $18 million. However, it gives agents an aggressive new comparable and creates leverage that did not exist one week ago.
Today’s NHL News Is Being Driven by Offer Sheets and Contract Pressure
The Ducks have until July 10 to match Philadelphia’s offer sheet. If Anaheim declines, the Flyers will acquire Carlsson and surrender their first-round draft picks in each of the next four seasons. Carlsson recorded career highs with 29 goals, 38 assists and 67 points in 70 games last season before adding 11 points in 12 playoff games.
The five-year term is almost as important as the money. Philadelphia is not buying eight seasons of Carlsson’s prime. The contract would take him directly toward unrestricted free agency while giving him a league-leading $18 million annual salary in the meantime.
That is why this offer sheet could have a wider effect. Bedard, Fantilli and other young stars coming off entry-level contracts can now point to Carlsson’s deal during negotiations. Columbus general manager Don Waddell has indicated that the Blue Jackets possess enough cap space to match an offer sheet for Fantilli, but the possibility of another aggressive move may encourage teams to finalize extensions sooner.
NHL Contract News by the Numbers
| Player | Development | Key number | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leo Carlsson | Flyers offer sheet | Five years, $90 million | Anaheim must match or receive four first-round picks |
| Jason Robertson | Filed for arbitration | 96 points in 82 games | The biggest name among 15 arbitration filings |
| Pavel Mintyukov | Ducks extension | Five years, $36 million | Anaheim secures a core young defenseman |
| Egor Chinakhov | Penguins extension | Three years, $18.75 million | Pittsburgh bets on his post-trade breakout |
Carlsson averaged 0.96 points per game last season, while Robertson produced 1.17 points per game. Chinakhov generated 36 points in 43 games after joining Pittsburgh, an impressive 0.84 points-per-game pace that helped earn him a $6.25 million annual cap hit.
Jason Robertson Leads 15 NHL Arbitration Filings
Robertson is the most significant player among the 15 restricted free agents who elected salary arbitration. The Dallas Stars winger led his team with 45 goals and 96 points in 82 games, giving him one of the strongest arbitration cases in recent memory.
Other notable filings include Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, Cole Perfetti, Kirby Dach, Braden Schneider, Cole Sillinger, Connor McMichael and Nick Robertson. The hearings are scheduled to run from July 20 through Aug. 1, although players can continue negotiating and sign contracts before their hearings.
It is important not to interpret an arbitration filing as a trade request or proof that negotiations have broken down. It is primarily a mechanism that creates a firm deadline. All 13 players involved in salary-arbitration cases during the previous offseason signed contracts before their scheduled hearings.
Robertson’s situation is different because of his production and long-term importance to Dallas. A one-year arbitration result could move him closer to unrestricted free agency, making a negotiated long-term extension the preferred outcome for the Stars.
Ducks Secure Pavel Mintyukov as Carlsson Decision Looms
Anaheim officially signed Mintyukov to a five-year contract after earlier reports indicated that an agreement was nearing completion. The reported value is $36 million, carrying an average annual value of $7.2 million. The 22-year-old defenseman had eight goals and 22 points in 73 games last season.
The extension confirms that Anaheim views Mintyukov as a central part of its blue line. It also adds another significant commitment while general manager Pat Verbeek decides whether to match Carlsson’s offer sheet.
Pittsburgh also completed important business by signing Chinakhov, Arturs Silovs, David Gustafsson and Joel Blomqvist. Chinakhov’s three-year contract is the most notable of the four after he produced 18 goals and 36 points in 43 games following his trade from Columbus. Silovs received a one-year, $2.8 million contract.
Shane Wright Emerges as a Possible New Jersey Devils Trade Target
The latest NHL trade rumors have connected Wright to New Jersey if the Utah Mammoth match the Devils’ offer sheet for Barrett Hayton.
New Jersey signed Hayton to a one-year, $4.775 million offer sheet. If Utah allows Hayton to leave, the Mammoth would receive a second-round pick. If Utah matches, the Devils would still need another third-line center, creating speculation that Wright could become their Plan B.
Wright would likely cost more than a second-round pick, but he also offers more long-term control than a veteran rental. At 22, he remains young enough to develop into a dependable middle-six center in a different system.
I believe New Jersey would be an intriguing fit. Wright would not be required to become the face of the franchise with Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier already occupying prominent roles. He could receive sheltered matchups, power-play opportunities and time to rebuild his confidence without carrying first-line expectations. However, this remains speculation rather than confirmation that the Devils and Kraken are actively negotiating.
Vladimir Tarasenko has also been discussed as a potential Edmonton Oilers target. Edmonton could use another proven scoring winger, although concerns about Tarasenko’s declining footspeed and likely salary demands make the fit less straightforward than it initially appears.
