The New York Rangers have been linked to free-agent forward Patrik Laine, but this is not a situation in which a massive guaranteed contract would be required. The more realistic possibility is a one-year, incentive-heavy agreement that allows Laine to rebuild his value while giving the Rangers another potentially dangerous goal scorer.
There has not been a confirmed report that Rangers general manager Chris Drury has submitted a formal offer. Instead, New York has emerged as one of the teams worth watching as it continues searching for additional offensive help. That distinction is important, but so is the fit. Laine’s right-handed shot, power-play ability and history as a high-end finisher address a clear Rangers need.
My projection would be a $1 million guaranteed contract carrying as much as $2.5 million in performance bonuses. That would give Laine a maximum potential value of approximately $3.5 million without forcing New York to assume the financial risk associated with his previous $8.7 million cap hit.
Why Patrik Laine Makes Sense for the New York Rangers
The Rangers’ interest in Laine makes sense because New York still needs players capable of finishing scoring chances. The Rangers ranked 23rd in the NHL with 235 non-shootout goals during the 2025-26 season. Mika Zibanejad led the team with 34 goals, while Alexis Lafrenière and Will Cuylle were the only other Rangers to reach 20.
New York has since added Pavel Dorofeyev and Oliver Bjorkstrand, but Laine would bring a different kind of offensive threat. At his best, he can establish himself near the left faceoff circle and force opposing penalty killers to respect his one-timer. That can create additional space for Zibanejad, J.T. Miller and Adam Fox on the Rangers’ power play.
Laine scored 36, 44, and 30 goals during his first three NHL seasons. He later recorded 20 goals in 52 appearances for Montreal in 2024-25, demonstrating that his shot remains capable of beating NHL goaltenders when he is healthy and placed in the right role. However, core-muscle surgery limited him to only five games in 2025-26.

What a Rangers Contract for Patrik Laine Could Look Like
Laine’s lengthy stay on injured reserve created an unusual contract opportunity. Because he has played more than 400 NHL games and spent at least 100 days on injured reserve during the previous season, he is eligible to sign a one-year contract containing performance bonuses.
Here is my projected contract model for the Rangers:
- Guaranteed salary and cap hit: $1 million
- Games-played incentives: Up to $1 million
- Goals and points incentives: Up to $1.5 million
- Maximum contract value: $3.5 million
This is an original projection rather than a reported offer. The structure would protect the Rangers if Laine is unable to remain healthy, while still giving the player a path to earn considerably more if he becomes a productive member of the top nine.
New York currently has approximately $2.4 million in projected cap space with 22 players on its active roster. A $1 million guaranteed contract would leave roughly $1.4 million in immediate projected room. Performance bonuses generally do not consume regular-season cap space unless a team’s total potential bonuses exceed the NHL’s permitted bonus cushion, although bonuses earned can create a carryover charge the following season.
Why the Risk Could Be Worth Taking
The Rangers should not sign Laine expecting him to become the centrepiece of their offence. They should sign him to become a specialized scoring option who can play second-unit or top-unit power-play minutes and provide finishing ability in carefully managed situations.
My biggest concern would not be his shot or offensive instincts. It would be whether the Rangers can create a role that accounts for his defensive limitations, pace, and recent injury history. Laine is unlikely to drive a line through transition, but New York would not need him to do that. The Rangers need him to find open ice, get his shot away quickly, and convert opportunities created by stronger play-driving teammates.
There is also a potential deadline value. Should Laine stay healthy and produce 15 to 20 goals during the first several months of the season, a low guaranteed cap hit would make him attractive to playoff contenders. The Rangers could retain him for a postseason push or potentially move him for a draft pick if the season does not develop as expected.
That is why this is the type of calculated gamble Drury should be exploring. A long-term commitment would be unnecessarily risky, but a one-year, bonus-heavy contract could deliver significantly more upside than the guaranteed salary suggests.
Are the New York Rangers Seriously Interested in Patrik Laine?
For now, the Rangers–Laine connection should be treated as a credible possibility rather than an advanced negotiation. Recent reporting has identified New York as a team still searching for forward help, while Laine is drawing interest from multiple clubs seeking a bonus-based, low-risk addition.
New York’s current roster and limited remaining cap room make a conventional multi-million-dollar contract difficult. A $1 million base salary with incentives, however, is a different conversation. It gives Laine an opportunity to restore his market value in a major hockey market and gives the Rangers another potential 20-goal threat without sacrificing valuable trade assets.
