Imagine drafting and developing a bona fide superstar, watching him score 45 goals and rack up a team-leading 96 points, only to realize you might not be able to afford to keep him. That is exactly the agonizing reality facing Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill this offseason. According to recent murmurings, including insights from Mark Lazerous of The Athletic, the Dallas Stars might actually be forced to test the trade market for their 26-year-old franchise winger, Jason Robertson.
Why would a Stanley Cup contender move their best player? Cold, hard salary cap mathematics. The Stars are walking into the offseason with a projected $11.1 million in cap space. Robertson is coming off a massive bargain of a four-year deal carrying a $7.75 million AAV. His next contract is universally expected to shatter the $10 million annual mark, effectively eating up every single dollar of Dallas’s available space. If Nill wants to replenish a depleted prospect pool and free up desperately needed cash, an unthinkable blockbuster might be brewing in Texas. Let’s dive into the reality of these rumors and what it means for the Stars’ roster.
Why a Jason Robertson Trade Makes Terrible (Yet Logical) Sense for the Stars
As an NHL analyst, my initial reaction to trading a player of Robertson’s caliber is simple: Don’t do it. Elite scoring wingers who consistently push the 100-point threshold do not grow on trees. Robertson proved his worth again in the postseason, tallying eight points in six games. However, when you dig into the comparable contracts across the league, the financial squeeze becomes obvious.
Robertson isn’t going to command Kirill Kaprizov money (who is slated to make a staggering $17 million annually when his new deal kicks in), but his camp will absolutely point to Mitch Marner. Marner is currently earning a $12 million AAV on his eight-year pact. If Robertson demands a contract in that same $11.5M to $12M neighborhood, the Dallas Stars simply cannot make the math work without shedding significant salary elsewhere.
This has fueled rumors over the past few months that Jim Nill could dangle Robertson on the trade market. A trade involving a prime-aged, 45-goal scorer would command a monumental return, think multiple first-round picks, blue-chip prospects, and NHL-ready talent on entry-level deals. For a team whose prospect pool has dried up during their recent contention window, a Robertson trade could restock the cupboards for the next decade.
The Roope Hintz Dilemma: Cap Casualties in Texas
If Dallas determines that keeping Jason Robertson is non-negotiable, which is what the fanbase will undoubtedly demand, something else has to give. The most prominent alternative rumor suggests the Dallas Stars may have to trade star center Roope Hintz to keep Robertson in victory green. Moving Hintz would free up his $8.45 million cap hit, giving Nill the breathing room required to sign Robertson to a double-digit AAV. But creating a massive hole down the middle of your top six to retain a winger is a dangerous game of roster Jenga. Either way, major changes are on the horizon in Dallas.
