If there is one thing we have learned about Tampa Bay Lightning General Manager Julien BriseBois over the years, it is that he is never afraid to swing for the fences at the NHL trade deadline. According to NHL insider Darren Dreger on TSN Radio 1050, the Lightning are officially “kicking tires” on acquiring Calgary Flames star center Nazem Kadri. Dreger dropped a massive nugget confirming that Kadri is open to a trade and has looked phenomenal recently, actively showcasing his high-end two-way skills to opposing scouts.
As someone who has analyzed the NHL trade market for years, this rumor immediately jumps off the page. The fit is undeniable. Kadri brings that perfect blend of sandpaper, Stanley Cup pedigree, and offensive punch that the Lightning thrive on in the postseason. The caveat? He still has three years remaining on a contract carrying a heavy $7 million AAV. However, we have seen BriseBois navigate cap gymnastics before: if there’s a will in Tampa Bay, there is absolutely a way.
How the Tampa Bay Lightning Can Fit Nazem Kadri’s $7M Cap Hit
The biggest roadblock to bringing the Calgary Flames veteran to the Sunshine State is the math. A $7 million AAV is a massive pill to swallow for a Tampa Bay Lightning roster already pressed tight against the ceiling. Dreger noted in his hit that he isn’t quite sure how the Lightning would seamlessly fit the salary. But knowing BriseBois, if he wants Kadri, he will find a way for the salary to work.
To pull this off, Calgary would almost certainly need to retain a significant portion of Kadri’s salary to get the cap hit down to a manageable $3.5 million. BriseBois has heavily relied on double-retention deals in the past to land difference-makers like David Savard. Double-retention is no longer available. Kadri does hold a modified No-Trade Clause (NTC), giving him a massive say in where he ends up. Yet, as Dreger pointed out, Kadri wants to win, and waiving his clause to join a perennial contender like Tampa Bay is a highly probable scenario.
Why the Calgary Flames Are Ready to Move On
From the Calgary Flames’ perspective, moving Kadri accelerates a retooling phase while his value is high. Kadri’s recent dominant play is a massive boon for Flames GM Craig Conroy. He isn’t just a rental; he’s a long-term top-six fixture. If the Lightning can package the right mix of future draft capital or high-upside prospect like Sam O’Reilly, Calgary gets assets that fit their timeline, and Tampa gets a warrior tailor-made for a deep playoff run.
