If you have been following the chaos surrounding the Vancouver Canucks lately, you know the rebuild chatter is deafening. With the roster in flux, the vultures are circling, and one name has popped up more than any other: Filip Hronek.
But if you think moving him is going to be easy—or if it’s even happening at all—his agent has a very loud reality check for you.
The 32 Thoughts Rumor: Why Hronek is a Prime Target
The smoke started billowing on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. Elliotte Friedman, arguably the most connected insider in the game, pinpointed Hronek as the Canucks’ most valuable trade chip.
It makes perfect sense on paper. Right-shot defensemen who can eat top-pairing minutes are the “unicorns” of the NHL. Friedman noted that Hronek is viewed as low-maintenance and highly competitive—exactly the type of player a team like the Ottawa Senators, who are desperate for blue-line help, would mortgage the future for.
If Hronek were truly on the market, the return would be massive. We are talking multiple first-round assets. But there is a major problem with this theory.
The Contract Reality: No-Movement Clause Explained
Earlier today, Hronek’s agent, Allan Walsh, took to social media to absolutely torch the speculation. Walsh didn’t mince words, calling the rumors “wasted air” and reminding everyone that the NHL is “not fantasy hockey.”
His stance is clear: Filip Hronek has no interest in going anywhere.
Here is the part people forget: Hronek holds all the cards. His contract, which runs through 2031-32 at a $7.25M cap hit, includes a full No-Movement Clause (NMC). He cannot be traded, waived, or sent down without his written permission.
Unless Hronek wakes up tomorrow and decides he wants out of Vancouver, these trade rumors are dead on arrival.
