The Edmonton Oilers are desperate for a save, but they won’t find it in Pittsburgh—at least, not yet.
If you’ve been following the latest buzz, you know the rumor mill is spinning: The Oilers have reportedly called the Pittsburgh Penguins about Tristan Jarry. It makes perfect sense on paper. Edmonton needs stability in the crease to save their season, and Jarry is enjoying a bounce-back campaign that reminds us all why he was an All-Star.
But if you’re an Oilers fan hoping for a quick fix, or a Penguins fan fearing a fire sale, take a breath. It’s not happening right now.
Josh Yohe of The Athletic recently reported that while the inquiry was real, the Penguins’ interest in selling is virtually non-existent. Why? Because despite the “retooling” narrative, this team is still hunting for a playoff spot. As long as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are still performing at a high level, the goal in Pittsburgh is the postseason.
The “Crosby Factor” Keeps Jarry in Steel City
Let’s look at this from an insider’s perspective. General Manager Kyle Dubas is walking a tightrope. On one side, he has to inject youth into the lineup for the future. On the other, he has a responsibility to two future Hall of Famers to remain competitive.
Trading your starting goaltender mid-season is a white flag. It tells the locker room—and specifically your captain—that the season is over. The Penguins are simply too close to the wild card race to send that message in December or January.
Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, Erik Karlsson, and Jarry are likely staying put as long as the math says “maybe.” The only scenario where Jarry moves is a total collapse by Pittsburgh over the next eight weeks. By then, the March 6 NHL trade deadline will loom large, but for a team like Edmonton, waiting until March might be fatal. They need help today, and Pittsburgh isn’t in the business of charity while they are still chasing points.
