When it comes to goaltending in Edmonton, the conversation never really sleeps. Recently, Dan Rosen of NHL.com was asked to weigh in on a spicy rumor: What level of interest should the Edmonton Oilers have in Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry?
Rosen’s assessment was blunt, and frankly, it hits the nail on the head. He suggests the only way Stan Bowman and the Oilers brass make a move for Jarry is if they are unequivocally convinced he is the missing piece to guarantee a Stanley Cup. He noted that the Oilers simply don’t know if Jarry is worth the gamble given the term left on his contract, whereas they know exactly what they have in their current starter, Stuart Skinner.
From my vantage point as a long-time NHL analyst, bringing Jarry into the fold feels like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. Let’s look at the reality of the situation. Jarry is a talented goaltender, no doubt. But is he the picture of stability Edmonton craves? Hardly.
Comparing the Risk: Tristan Jarry vs. Stuart Skinner
My take is simple: Jarry blows hot and cold, largely the same way Skinner does. The difference? Skinner has the pedigree of resilience. We are talking about a goaltender who has shaken off mid-season slumps to carry the Oilers to two straight Stanley Cup Finals appearances. That is invaluable experience that you cannot buy on the trade market.
Furthermore, we have to talk about durability. Tristan Jarry has a documented injury history that has plagued the Pittsburgh Penguins at critical moments. The Oilers are in a “win-now” window that is wide open, but also fragile. Betting on a goalie with chronic health issues and inconsistent playoff performances seems like a step backward from Skinner, who, despite his critics, has proven he can endure the grind of a two-month postseason run.
Unless Pittsburgh is retaining a massive chunk of salary or taking a bad contract back, this swap doesn’t move the needle enough for Edmonton. The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t, especially when the devil you know has already walked through the fire of the Finals twice.
