The Utah Mammoth are a team on the rise, but can they make the leap to playoff contention? The answer to that question will depend on the answers to two even bigger questions. The development of their young forwards, Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther, and the integration of newcomer JJ Peterka will be the keys to the Mammoth’s success this season. If these three can find their groove, the Mammoth could be a force to be reckoned with in the Western Conference.
Cooley and Guenther both had breakout seasons last year, and they’ll be looking to build on that success in the upcoming campaign. Cooley, the third overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, is a dynamic playmaker with a high hockey IQ. Guenther, the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, is a pure goal scorer with a shoot-first mentality. If these two can continue to develop at their current pace, they could form one of the most dangerous young duos in the NHL.
Unlocking the Mammoth’s Offensive Potential
Peterka’s arrival adds another layer of intrigue to the Mammoth’s forward group. The 23-year-old winger is a proven goal scorer who should be able to take some of the pressure off of Cooley and Guenther. However, it may take some time for him to adjust to a new team and a new system. If he can hit the ground running, the Mammoth could have one of the most explosive offenses in the league.
The Mammoth are a young and exciting team with a bright future. However, they’re not without their question marks. The development of Cooley and Guenther, and the integration of Peterka will be the keys to their success this season. If these three can live up to their potential, the Mammoth could be a legitimate playoff contender.
