The Vegas Golden Knights have built a reputation for their aggressive, all-in approach to team building, and it’s brought them a Stanley Cup. This summer’s blockbuster acquisition of Mitch Marner is just the latest example of their relentless pursuit of talent. But with great reward comes great risk, and the Knights may be facing a cap crunch that could have significant long-term consequences. While the addition of a superstar like Marner is a clear win for the present, it casts a shadow of uncertainty over the future of another one of their stars: Jack Eichel.
Is Jack Eichel’s Time in Vegas Nearing Its End?
It seems almost unthinkable, doesn’t it? Eichel, the dynamic center who was instrumental in bringing the Stanley Cup to Vegas, could be on his way out. According to a recent report from Anthony DiMarco of Daily Faceoff, an Eichel extension is far from a sure thing. With Marner now on the books at a hefty $12 million AAV, the Knights’ salary cap situation is getting tight. Eichel, who is coming off a career-high 94-point season, will be looking for a significant raise on his next contract. With the salary cap on the rise, it’s not out of the question that his AAV could surpass the $14 million benchmark set by Leon Draisaitl.
The addition of Marner to Eichel’s wing is a tantalizing prospect for Golden Knights fans. The two are expected to form one of the most dynamic duos in the league, and Eichel’s point totals could skyrocket. However, that just drives his price tag up even further. The Golden Knights have some tough decisions to make, and while it’s hard to imagine them letting a player of Eichel’s caliber walk, they may not have a choice. This is a story that will be worth watching as the season unfolds.
